Zaheer Abbas represents national and regional businesses, private equity-backed healthcare platforms, property owners, developers and investors in commercial leasing, real estate acquisitions and dispositions, and financing. His work includes medical office, retail, office, industrial, flex and restaurant properties.
He advises healthcare platforms on leasing across multijurisdictional portfolios, including new market entry, expansion, renewals, relocations and portfolio restructuring.
Zaheer joined KatzDay as a Senior Associate in 2021. His prior experience in England and the United States includes government, law firm and in-house roles in commercial real estate and corporate law.
Zaheer earned his law degree from the University of Liverpool in England and an LL.M. in Business and Finance Law from The George Washington University Law School. He is admitted to practice in Maryland, New York and the District of Columbia.
Representative Matters
• Serves as commercial leasing counsel to a private equity-backed national healthcare platform with more than 110 locations across North America, advising on new market entry, expansion, leases, renewals, amendments and relocations.
• Advises an institutionally backed primary and urgent care platform on lease negotiations, amendments, assignments, tenant estoppels, portfolio restructuring and negotiated early terminations across multiple markets.
• Represented a private equity-backed healthcare provider in commercial leasing matters throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area and the southeastern United States. The provider was subsequently acquired by a national health insurance organization.
• Represented a healthcare and community services provider in negotiating financing for a commercial office building in Prince George’s County, Maryland, including loan documentation and financing terms.
• Serves as leasing counsel to a family-owned Maryland commercial landlord, negotiating more than 20 retail, office, flex and restaurant leases and related guaranties in Anne Arundel and surrounding counties.
• Represented the seller of a multi-tenant retail shopping center in Frederick County, Maryland, coordinating tenant estoppels, subordination matters and lease assignments through settlement.
• Coordinated simultaneous lease terminations at three healthcare locations in Maryland and Virginia as part of a multi-site operator’s portfolio consolidation.
• Represented a purchaser in the acquisition of a veterinary clinic property in New Jersey, including title and survey review and negotiation of the operating company’s lease delivered at closing.
Prior Employment Experience
• During prior employment, worked on commercial real estate matters supporting an approximately $2 billion initiative to develop electric-vehicle charging infrastructure across North America.
